Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) - the other additive manufacturing process with versatile potential

Laser Metal Deposition offers completely new possibilities in the design of components. It can be used as a manufacturing process for new workpieces, but especially as a process for hybrid production or repairs.

How do your applications and components benefit from laser metal deposition?

Primarily a coating process...

Often, an application requires two properties that a material cannot fulfill. High corrosion resistance paired with wear resistance would be an example of this. When selecting a material, the designer is then faced with the difficult task of having to look for a compromise. With laser metal deposition, corrosion-resistant materials can be easily coated with wear-resistant materials – even with complex geometries.

Adding not only material, but also features...

Laser metal deposition enables the construction of new geometric structures on existing substrates. This gives the designer a new degree of freedom with regard to the design of his component. This not only simplifies production, but often makes it much more economical.

Hybrid manufacturing – a blessing for cost-effective component production

Precision components are often very complex structures that cause a lot of chips during production. Laser deposition welding in combination with joining technology enables the economical production of individual components, which are only joined in a second step by brazing or electron beam welding. The production of the individual components can be carried out in part using traditional production technology, so that manufacturing costs can be effectively optimised.

Repair instead of disposal...

In many areas, but especially in mold making, certain areas of the tool wear out faster than others. The LMD process enables the near-contour repair of damaged areas. This allows the tool to be reused for many cycles after the post-processing of the layer. For components of this type, this is an important economic factor.

Production of titanium components thanks to inert gas technology

Our LMD system benefits from a special, gas-tight chamber. The inert atmosphere enables laser metal deposition of oxygen-affine materials such as titanium. This simplifies the sometimes complex machining process for titanium components.

Reproducibility - a duty for LMD

An important feature of LMD, which comes into play in all of the above-mentioned process features, is the high precision of the system’s programmable control system. It allows very good reproducibility for both smaller and larger series.
